Wheelchair bowlers to roll for crown in Burlington Bowlers will come from as near as Graham and as far away as Redding, Calif., and will range in age up to 75 years old when the American Wheelchair Bowling Association holds its 2006 national championships this week at Country Club Lanes West in Burlington. The 45th annual event begins tonight and culminates Saturday when national singles champions will be crowned in the scratch, "A" handicap and "B" handicap divisions. The first three days of the tournament consist of social and team events and an exhibition match featuring 19 past national champions representing 40 titles. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the singles competition will be held with 76 bowlers from 18 states in search of a national title. Frank Valenzuela of Graham is the only North Carolina player scheduled to compete in the tournament, which offers an $18,000 purse. Hell make the short commute from Graham while three-time national scratch champion Walt Roy will come from Redding. Al Uttecht of Anaheim, Calif., will be on hand to defend last years national scratch championship and possibly add a 13th title to his resum. "Hes the man," said Dave Roberts, executive secretary/treasurer of the American Wheelchair Bowling Association. The oldest player in the field, 75-year-old Paul OHora of Scranton, Pa., will make his 44th appearance in the tournament. Hes the only charter member of the AWBA to compete in this years tournament. He won the national scratch championship in 1965. This years tournament is the first to be held in Burlington and Country Club Lanes West, which is owned by Chico Valenzuela. "Ive known Chico since 2000 when I bowled in Danville (Va.) and Chico owned the house there," said Roberts, who lives in Clover, Va. "Country Club Lanes West is a nice facility for wheelchair bowlers so we thought wed take the tournament there. We hope to get the word out about wheelchair bowling and maybe identify some new bowlers." |
